Installing a synthetic turf system is fairly basic. Most tools required for installing turf are usually found at home or can be purchased at the local hardware store. Some tools you also may need, like the compactor, can be found at the local rental store.
For the longest lasting turf project the development of a solid perimeter is a must. The use of concrete for the boarder is highly recommended. Extruded concrete curb companies can usually be found by a local installer, relatively inexpensive, and will enhance the lifetime of the installation. Wood, plastic, and metal boarders are also acceptable boarders for the use as a perimeter of the turf.
The two layer "flex" base system we recommend is a system that has been proven to last for years. It is the same system used for brick pavers on driveways, sidewalks and roadways for hundreds of years. Most soil conditions are of an expansive clay or sandy soil. An expansive clay soil means that with rain it will expand and in dry summers, it will shrink.
Adding 3-4 inches of base rock and 1-2 inches of base fines, this "Flex Base" system will hold consistently together in unison during weather changes. The use of a single layer system consisting of decomposed granite, or “blue fines" ¼ inch base fines is and acceptable layer for construction for most applications.
